Q. Should I notify my neighbors about the fence replacement?
A. Yes. Your neighbors will need to make arrangements regarding their pets and may wish to secure their back yard. They may also wish to remove items from their side of the fence, as items attached to the fence may be unknowingly damaged or disposed of during removal.
Q. Can Shoreline Fence Company do anything to stop our dog from digging underneath the fence?
A. We don’t recommend installing fence pickets directly into dirt since this invites rot and insect infestation. Generally, most fences are installed an inch or two above grade. On any fence installed without a concrete footer, we recommend using 2 x 6 treated kickboards, to prevent pets from digging into the exposed area. (A treated kickboard can be placed in direct contact with the soil without threat of rot or insect infestation.) If you have a persistent dog with a habit of digging, you may consider a concrete footer.
Q. Will Shoreline Fence Company remove items attached to my fence such as lattice, equipment boxes, rain gauges, potted plants, etc.?
A. We ask you to remove your valuables from the fence and work site, so the items aren’t unknowingly damaged or disposed of during the fence removal process.
Q. Does the crew trim tree limbs or bushes in the way of the fence?
A. We ask you to handle all required trimming prior to fence installation. Although Shoreline Fence Company crews are experts in custom fence installation, our crews have limited knowledge of proper trimming & pruning practices. Any additional trimming that must be performed by the Shoreline Fence Company crew may be subject to an additional charge.
Q. Does Shoreline Fence Company locate property pins and install the fence on the property line?
A. No. We put the fence back where it was originally located unless you tell us otherwise. If you have concerns about the property line, we recommend you establish the correct location of the property lines before installation of the fence or your fence. This can easily be arranged by contracting a local survey company to locate and clearly mark the pins.
Q. Should we be concerned with deeds and codes relating to our fence or gate?
A. Yes. You will need to read the deed restrictions relating to your fence. HOA deeds and local building codes can restrict fence heights, easements, stain color preferences, and even material types. Our experienced fence consultants are familiar with most local codes and will be happy to share their knowledge. However, deeds within HOA associations can vary greatly, and it is your responsibility to read and comply with established requirements.
Q. Will Shoreline Fence Company locate underground utilities?
A. Shoreline Fence Company will call PSEG prior to the excavation.
Q. What is the scheduling process?
A. Our fence consultants will work with you and your family to coordinate scheduling options. The start date could vary from one to three weeks, depending upon the size of the project, material availability, current workload, and weather.
Q. Does your crew dig out the old posts and footings?
A. Typically all corner, gate, and terminal posts will be dug up and reset in exactly the same spot. Line posts are usually cut below the grade and the new posts are re-spaced. This is standard practice and within AFA industry guidelines, but if desired, line posts can be completely dug out for an additional charge. Please discuss this option with your Shoreline Fence Company consultant.
Q. Will my new fence come with a written guarantee?
A. Yes. You will receive a written guarantee covering all defects in workmanship for a period of 1 to 10 years, depending on the type of fence and products installed. (Storm and wind damage are excluded from this warranty.)
Q. Is it normal to have color variances between cedar pickets?
A. Yes. Since cedar is a natural wood product, it will normally vary in color and hue. But if you prefer a more consistent color, ask your fence consultant about stain options.
